GCRA nominated for Scottish Health Award 2006
Grampian Cardiac Rehabilitation Association were one of hundreds of nominations received for the Scottish Health Awards 2006. This prestigious annual event organised by the Daily Record newspaper and the Scottish Executive Health Department in association with GE Healthcare and Pfizer seeks to give recognition to those involved in health services who go the extra mile. People whose work and efforts genuinely make a difference. GCRA were nominated for an award in view of the huge success of the 28 cardiac exercise classes we operate and manage for people with heart disease throughout the Grampian region. We only became aware of our nomination when advised by the organisers that we had been selected as a finalist for the Heart Disease Team Award. The winners of all 16 categories were announced at a Dinner and Awards evening held at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange on the evening of 9th November attended by four members of our Executive Management Team. Regrettably it was not to be our night and we were beaten into second place by the Heart Failure Network Team from NHS Lothian. Our congratulations and best wishes go to the Lothian team, well done! As for us at GCRA ? Not a bad result at all for a bunch of retired volunteer lay people supported by a great team of exercise instructors, coming second to a professional NHS team!!!
As BBC newsreader Jackie Bird, who hosted the event said, “These awards reach out across the spectrum of the NHS and they seek out the unsung voluntary workers who do so much and rarely receive recognition” After the event GCRA Chairman Robert Paton, said “We were rather staggered to be nominated at all after only four years in existence and to beat off a lot of professional competition and reach the finals speaks volumes for the whole team, management, instructors and members, a big thank you and congratulations to them all.”
